About

Aleksandr Segal was born in Sverdlovsk-44, a secret town in what was once Siberia. (Today it is known as Novouralsk, a closed town in Russia.) His family eventually emigrated to the United States and he graduated cum laude from Brooklyn College with a B.A. in Philosophy with Honors in 2009.

Aleksandr’s origin in the Soviet Union and his upbringing in New York City’s suburban boroughs have helped develop his interest in the relationship between places and people. His photographic work is influenced by August Sander, Paul Strand, Robert Frank, Edward Burtynsky, and Bernd & Hilla Becher.

When he’s not taking photos, Aleks enjoys bicycling, fresh produce, Reddit, and documentaries.
